UN Statistics Division is organising a workshop on the Operation of Civil Registration, Vital Statistics and Identity Management Systems in East Asian countries from 13-17 November in Hanoi. Discussions will focus on the revised Handbook on Management and the new Guidelines for Evaluation.

The Solomon Islands adopted a new Civil Registration database software system in December of 2013. Mr.
CRVS systems play a key role in monitoring and facilitating progress towards the SDGs. As the best source of continuous and up to date information on birth, death, health and population statistics, CRVS is needed to measure a wide range of population-based SDG targets. Legal documentation provided by civil registration systems helps to reduce trafficking, statelessness, sexual exploitation and child marriage. Improving CRVS is also an SDG objective in its own right and is covered by Goals 16.9 and 17.19.
Cambodia has completed a national baseline survey which provides key benchmark data on the status of CRVS
The Pacific Ministers of Health Meeting was held in the Cook Islands from 28-30 August. Ministers emphasized the importance of CRVS to the health sector for monitoring key regional priorities such as the Pacific “Healthy Islands” Framework and the Sustainable Development Goals. The Ministers also noted the importance of continuing to improve birth, death and cause of death data quality through health information systems and a multi-sectoral approach to CRVS.
