Nepal to assign unique ID number at birth as part of digital ID program

Nepal's Department of National ID and Civil Registration has started assigning national ID numbers to children during birth registration, as the country moves away from citizenship certificates and toward biometric smart national ID cards. 

With unique national identity numbers assigned as early as birth registration, the country is hopeful for citizens to have better access to government documents. The government is also accelerating efforts for wider adoption of the national ID card for Nepali citizens based on their biometric and demographic data.
