The Fourth Global Expert Forum for Producers and Users of Disaster Related Statistics was held during 28 October - 1 November 2024 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. During the meeting, a side event was organized to explore the nexus between disaster related statistics and civil registration and vital statistics (CRVS) systems, including the use of civil registration to support the production of disaster-related statistics.

During the event, the importance of robust CRVS systems came into sharp focus. The critical role of CRVS systems in disaster response and recovery was highlighted. Well functioning systems enable governments to track key demographic events, assess population needs, and allocate resources effectively. Strengthening CRVS systems is not only essential for disaster response but also for long-term development planning. Accurate and timely data on births, deaths, and other vital events can inform policy decisions, improve public health programs, and contribute to sustainable development.

To address this challenge, Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) and Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) are advocating for more resilient CRVS systems. These systems must be both resilient and agile, able to withstand disruptions and quickly adjust to changing circumstances. They must be proactive, anticipating potential crises, and resilient, absorbing the shocks of disasters and pandemics to minimize their impact on vital statistics recording.
