The Ministerial Declaration on CRVS in Asia and the Pacific emphasizes the need to address CRVS inequalities among hard-to-reach and marginalized populations, promoting universality and equity in civil registration regardless of factors such as gender, religion, or ethnicity. Countries are encouraged to conduct assessments to assess where such inequalities may exist.

This comprehensive assessment reviewed the main aspects of Cambodia's Civil Registration and Vital Statistics (CRVS) system using the WHO guidance tool. These include the legal and regulatory framework; registration, certification and coding practices; and the compilation, tabulation and use of the resulting data. The focus throughout the assessment was on births, deaths and causes of death, because these are fundamental to guide public health programes, monitor population dynamics and measure key health indicators.

The Sample Registration System (SRS) in India is the largest demographic survey in the world covering about 1.5 million households and 7.3 million population. It has continued to be the main source of information on fertility and mortality indicators both at the State and National levels. Apart from the large sample size and geographical spread in most of the Districts, the system has a unique feature of dual recording, which involves collection of data through two different procedures viz., continuous enumeration and retrospective half-yearly surveys.

During the two-day meeting, participants discussed: sustainable development challenges and opportunities in the Asia-Pacific region; regional monitoring and review mechanisms; perspectives on the post-2015 development agenda and the sustainable development goals; the form and function of the Asia-Pacific Forum on Sustainable Development beyond 2015; and the transition from the Millennium Development Goals to the sustainable development goals. The Forum also showcased national examples and experiences in sustainable development, with a focus on integration of its three dimensions.

Having a birth certificate is a key to citizenship. Most people born in this country take it for granted that they can prove they are Australian and lawful citizens by producing their birth certificate. But a number of Australians — predominantly Indigenous people and those from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) communities — miss out on the benefits of citizenship and struggle to fully participate in society because their birth has never been registered, or if it was, they cannot produce a birth certificate to prove it.
