2024 Civil Registration and Vital Statistics Applied Research Training Initiative

The Ministerial Declaration on CRVS in Asia and the Pacific emphasizes the need to address CRVS inequalities among hard-to-reach and marginalized populations, promoting universality and equity in civil registration regardless of factors such as gender, religion, or ethnicity. Countries are encouraged to conduct assessments to assess where such inequalities may exist.

Asia-Pacific Civil Registration and Vital Statistics Research Forum

The United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) organized the first Asia-Pacific CRVS Research Forum which was held from 3-4 April 2023. Hosted by ESCAP in Bangkok, the fully online event offered a major research, information sharing, and capacity-building opportunity for participants. They were able to present at and attend paper presentations and interactive sessions, including networking opportunities.

ESCAP Resolution 69/15 (2013) Implementing the outcome of the High-level Meeting on the Improvement of Civil Registration and Vital Statistics in Asia and the Pacific

This resolution calls for ESCAP to convene a regional intergovernmental ministerial meeting on CRVS in 2014. In addition, among other things, the resolution reiterates the call for countries to conduct assessments of CRVS systems, supports the Committee on Statistics’ endorsement of the Regional Strategic Plan for the Improvement of Civil Registration and Vital Statistics in the Asia and the Pacific, and requests ESCAP to establish a regional steering group on CRVS.

ARROW and partners recommend to put in place functional CRVS systems at the national level

During the 49th Commission on Population and Development the Asian-Pacific Resource & Research Centre for Women (ARROW) delivered a statement endorsed by more than 55 Civil Society Organizations from the region. Amongst the cited recommendations for the strengthening of demographic evidence, they called upon States and the international community to support the monitoring of ICPD and the SDG Agenda 2030, through establishment of functional data instruments such as civil registration and vital statistics (CRVS) systems, censuses, and household surveys at the national level. Further to this, stakeholders should take into account the advances and innovations in Information, and Communication Technology for achieving these goals.

Regional workshop on outcomes and lessons learnt from technical assistance projects in support of improving CRVS systems

On 18-19 April, ESCAP convened a regional workshop for countries who received small grants to support national CRVS improvement activities. The technical activities conducted by countries reflected their specific national priorities and were aligned with the Regional Action Framework for CRVS. Participants included partner institutions from Armenia, Bhutan, Federated States of Micronesia, Kiribati and the Philippines.

ESCAP will convene a regional workshop for countries who received small grants to support national CRVS improvement activities. The technical activities conducted by countries reflected their specific national priorities and were aligned with the Regional Action Framework for CRVS. Participants of the workshop will be representatives of the partner institutions from the 5 countries (Armenia, Bhutan, Federated States of Micronesia, Kiribati and the Philippines).

Report on national targets and baseline data, Australia

As part of the reporting structure of the Regional Action Framework on Civil Registration and Vital Statistics (CRVS) in Asia and the Pacific, by the end of 2015, members and associate members are required to submit a baseline report to the ESCAP Secretariat through their designated national focal point. This report is the report submitted by Australia.
