In preparation of the Second Ministerial Conference on CRVS in Asia and the Pacific held from 16 to 19 November 2021, ESCAP has prepared a report on the situation of CRVS systems in the region. By celebrating the progresses and highlighting the challenges remaining to achieving universal registration systems, the report aims at shaping the priorities for the second half of the Decade.

The current pandemic is disrupting CRVS systems all over the world, but also highlighting why well-functioning systems are more essential than ever. As a result, the UN Statistics Division, the World Health Organization and the UN Legal Identity Agenda Task Force developed COVID-19 resources offering guidance for civil registration stakeholders on maintaining CRVS activities.

As Insight readers will know, ESCAP will be hosting the Second Ministerial Conference on CRVS in Asia and the Pacific from 16 - 19 November 2021 to celebrate the regional achievements of the first half of the CRVS Decade (2015 - 2024), as well as address remaining challenges.
When used well, civil registration and vital statistics (CRVS) data can add credibility to a narrative and enhance a journalistic story. However, writing articles or preparing other media products based on CRVS data requires knowledge of how a well-functioning CRVS system works, who is responsible for the administration of the systems and the kind of data it can produce. Furthermore, journalists and content producers need to know how to analyze data to articulate trends and patterns while communicating findings clearly and accurately to their audience.

The 2nd Ministerial Conference on Civil Registration and Vital Statistics (CRVS) in Asia and the Pacific will be held from 16-19 November 2021 in Bangkok, Thailand. The virtual event will mark the midpoint in the Asia-Pacific CRVS Decade (2015 – 2024), the shared vision declared at the Ministerial Conference on CRVS in 2014 to “Get Every One in the Picture” and ensure, by 2024, that all people in region will benefit from universal and responsive civil registration and vital statistics.
